Smithers is located in the Bulkley valley in North-Central British Columbia. Long known as a sports fishing mecca for steelhead, trout and salmon, the area also attracts visitors due to its stunning vistas, wealth of outdoors recreational activities and abundant wildlife. Smithers is surrounded by snow covered peaks, with glacier shrouded Hudson Bay Mountain rising to 8,600 feet directly above the town. The Babine mountains, containing a wilderness quality Provincial Park, are located on the opposite side of the valley from the Hudson Bay range. A downhill ski area is also located on Hudson Bay mountain, 20 minutes from downtown Smithers.
The weather in the Smithers area is relatively mild since it is in the coastal range where temperatures are moderated by the proximity of the Pacific Ocean. High temperatures in the summer average in the 70's (F.)/ 20's (C.), with January winter highs averaging in the low 20's (F)/-5 (C). As a result of Smithers’ geographic position, it has the virtue of both attractive summer weather and winter conditions that produce significant amounts of dry powder snow without unbearable cold. This makes Smithers a truly four season vacation destination.
Smithers can be easily reached by commercial airlines flights from Vancouver (twice a day) and by automobile, bus or train. It is located on the trans-Canada Highway (Highway 16), which serves as one of the primary routes to Alaska. Motor Vehicle rentals and ground transfer services are readily available at Smithers airport.
While Smithers is bordered on all sides by true wilderness, the town has all the amenities of civilization, including two supermarkets, a number of outdoors equipment stores and a substantial retail business community. You will be able to obtain all the food and other supplies that you may need during your trip within a 20-minute drive from Canyon Creek.
