Biking

Do your tastes run to long mellow tours through mountain scenery; or would you prefer careening down an alpine path; or, how about a rugged day on a forested trail? No matter which type of biking activity you most enjoy, it is accessible within a short distance of our front door. In a few minutes after leaving the lodge you can be cruising on an old logging road, climbing towards the alpine or setting out for a relaxing ride under snow capped peaks where your only concern is watching for moose and other local wildlife. Our property is adjacent to Babine Mountains Provincial Park with immediate access to its 30 miles/50 kilometers of designated mountain biking trails. Also, in all directions lie uncounted miles of logging roads or old trails where you can bike with little likelihood of seeing a car or another person for your entire day. Given the variety of terrain, as well as the magnificent scenery, you won’t go a day without experiencing the kind of biking you enjoy most.

Fishing

If you know steelhead, you know the Bulkley Valley. World famous as a premier steelhead fishing destination, the area also has outstanding runs of coho, king, sockeye and other Pacific salmon. In fact, there are continuous salmon runs on the Bulkley and adjacent rivers throughout the summer starting in July and lasting through September. The area also boasts terrific trout waters, including rainbow, brook, cutthroat and lake trout fisheries.

In early August, it’s the sockeye in the Babine River that attract the most attention. By late August and into November, the steelhead are in. Throughout the summer you can fish for trophy coho or king salmon in many waters, with the runs staged at different times depending on the river. Come anytime for great trout fishing, such as in Rainbow Alley in Babine Lake (best in June - fly fishing only). Our location places us near all this action. We recommend that you connect with a local expert to insure that you spend your time most productively while looking for the current hot spots. Hiking

Want to get to alpine without camping out? Want to climb above tree line and be back enjoying all the comforts of home before dinner? Want to hike to wildflower carpeted mountain meadows without 50 pounds of gear on your back? Want a chance to see moose, wolves, mountain goats, bear or lynx without a multi-day trek into the wilderness? Then, you should come to Canyon Creek. Babine Mountains Provincial Park will be right outside your door. You can reach alpine from trailheads located within a 10 minute drive. Flatlanders will hardly have to acclimate, since tree line is at 4,800 feet/1,500 meters. Although a true wilderness area, the Provincial Park has over 50 miles/85 kilometers of high quality, well marked and maintained trails. You can hike for days in the park and rarely see another person. What you probably will see are the local mountain goats and, even if you don’t actually run across any of the area’s wolves, lynx or bear, you’ll know that they are around from their tracks and other sign.

Wildlife is most easily seen in June and again in late summer and early Fall. The wildflower season is at its peak in mid to late July. Regardless of the season, the scenery will be breathtaking and the feel of true wilderness palpable.

Wildlife and Wildflowers

One of the things you’ll immediately notice about Smithers is the abundance of its flora and fauna. Take a drive any morning or evening and you are apt to see bear, moose, fox and deer (both mule and white-tail) along the side of area roads. On a day hike or bike trip into Babine Mountains Provincial Park, you’ll almost always see some of the local mountain goat herd. In midsummer you will also see alpine meadows filled with a rainbow of wildflowers.

The Babine Mountains and surrounding areas host one of the healthiest remaining grizzly bear populations on the continent. In August and September, you can take a drive from out our door and view grizzlies feeding on salmon. On almost any excursion into the woods, you’ll come across bear, wolf and lynx tracks and other sign. A winter cross-country ski or snow-shoe outing will lead you into a world full of animal life in which you can track fur bearing animals such as weasel, martin, fisher and even wolverine (if you are really lucky) or wolf, moose, fox and lynx.

We think that you’ll enjoy your trip most if you connect with one of the local experts who can teach you about wildlife and endangered species reservation while leading you into the best habitat. You can also join us for our organized tours and educational programs.
